This Junior Clinical Fellowship in Neurocritical Care offers a fantastic experience to gain knowledge, skills, and experience of working in a tertiary multidisciplinary team. It would be an ideal post for those at F3 level or Core Training who wish to strengthen an application for speciality training in the fields of Anaesthesia, ICM, Neurology, Neurosurgery, ACCS, or Emergency Medicine. This 1 year fixed-term post offers plenty of supervised hands-on learning and teaching in Neurocritical care, with many opportunities to learn airway skills, central venous and arterial cannulation, and all other practical and theoretical facets on this busy but vibrant ICU. As this is a busy tertiary ICU, previous medical experience working in the NHS or equivalent health system is essential.
The successful applicants will participate in twice-daily consultant-led ICU ward rounds, conduct daily clinical reviews of critically unwell patients, and be involved in all aspects of their daily medical care. Excellent teamworking, communication and documentation skills are required. There is plenty of opportunity for leaning and development of skills under expert supervision. The JCF will be part of the on-call team for the Neurosciences ICU, supervised at all times by the resident Airway doctor tier.
The Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit is a specialist tertiary-referral ICU within the West Wing, a wing of the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, UK. The John Radcliffe Hospital is a world-renowned teaching hospital integrating acute and elective services with clinical research and education. The Neuro-ICU works closed with Oxford Critical Care, the Major Trauma Centre, and the Neurosurgery, Neurology, and Specialist Surgery departments to provide both emergency and elective care to patients with intracranial or head and neck diseases.
The Neuro-ICU is a busy ICU but with a strong ethos of learning, equality, and multidisciplinary engagement. The Junior Clinical Fellows are genuinely welcomed and are an essential part of this Consultant-led team.

Clinical
The post-holder’s duties will be primarily at the West Wing of the John Radcliffe
Hospital site but the opportunity to work in theatre can be explored once appointed.
Teaching/Research
Opportunities for teaching, training, research and management will be available
within the fellowship programme and will be agreed by the Clinical Lead for
Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit with the post holder prior to commencement of
the fellowship.
Clinical Governance
The post-holder will participate in clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies.
Personal and Professional Development
The post-holder will be required to keep himself/herself fully up-to-date with their relevant area of practice and to be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust. Professional or study leave will be granted at the discretion of the Trust, in line with the prevailing Terms and Conditions of Service, to support appropriate study, postgraduate training activities, relevant CME courses and other appropriate personal development needs.
Management
The post-holder will be required to work within the Trust's management policies and procedures, both statutory and internal, accepting that the resources available to the Trust are finite and that all changes in clinical practice or workload, or developments requiring additional resources must have prior agreement with the Trust. He/she will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of his/her patients, and the running of his/her clinical department under the direction of the lead clinician and/or directorate chair.
Infection Control
Infection Control is everyone’s responsibility. All staff, both clinical and non-clinical, are required to adhere to the Trusts’ Infection Prevention and Control Policies and make every effort to maintain high standards of infection control at all times thereby reducing the burden of Healthcare Associated Infections including MRSA.
General
The post-holder will assume a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge and the proper functioning of his/her department. Office accommodation is available for this post.

Junior Clinical Fellowship in Neurocritical Care Job Plan
Post Duration -fixed term 12 months
This job is based in the tertiary referral Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit in Oxford. The job entails providing cover of the 15 level 3 bed tertiary referral Neuro ICU as a shift pattern involving on-call and weekend working. It is suitable for both F3 and Core Trainee levels of experience. There are two tiers of on-call and the applicant will be assigned to the appropriate tier reflecting their experience.
There will be the opportunity to take part in anaesthesia sessions or areas relevant to the applicants’ experience and also to further enhance ones’ CV.
The Fellow will also be part of the Cardiac Arrest Team in the West Wing of the John Radcliffe Hospital and therefore should have ALS. Advanced airway skills are also desirable but there is flexibility depending on experience.
All on-call is closely supervised at consultant level, with the consultant assuming overall responsibility.
Annual and study leave arrangements must be coordinated to ensure there is an acceptable level of clinical cover.
MAIN CONDITIONS OF SERVICE
1. The post is covered by the national Terms and Conditions of Service of Hospital
Medical and Dental Staff (England and Wales) and the Conditions of Service determined by the General Whitley Council for the Health Services (Great Britain), as amended from time to time. As the Trust develops it will review these terms and may vary the national agreements to respond to local conditions and reflect Trust requirements following negotiation with the BMA Local Negotiating Committee.
1. Applicants invited for interview will be asked to complete a medical questionnaire for submission to the Trust's occupational health service.
NB Medical staff who will be undertaking clinical work will be required to providewrittenproof of hepatitis B immunisation and antibody status, BCG and rubella immunisations. In the absence of such evidence the post-holder will not be placed on the payroll or undertake clinical work until the evidence is produced to the satisfaction of the Trust.
1. The successful candidate must hold full registration with the GMC.
2. The successful candidate is not required to subscribe to a recognised professional defence organisation to fulfil his/her contractual obligations to this Trust, but should ensure he/she has adequate defence cover as appropriate, for example GMC disciplinary proceeding.

The John Radcliffe Hospital is the main emergency site and is designated as a Major Trauma Centre. It provides Acute Medical and Surgical services, Trauma, Neurosciences (Neurology and Neurosurgery), Cardiac, Specialist Surgery (Ophthalmology; Ear, Nose and Throat; Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery), Women’s Services and Children’s Services (based in the Children’s Hospital on the site). Critical Care facilities include an adult general intensive care unit (Oxford Critical Care), Paediatric and Neonatal intensive care and two specialist critical care units (Neurosciences and Cardiothoracics).
The West Wing of the John Radcliffe Hospital opened in January 2007 along with the Children’s Hospital, Oxford. The West Wing houses services were previously based in the Radcliffe Infirmary in the centre of Oxford. The West Wing offers state of the art facilities for patients and for staff, with services including neurosciences, specialist surgery and the Oxford Eye Hospital. In addition to clinical space, it provides a base for University teaching and research. The Radcliffe Infirmary building, which has housed medical services, teaching and research, since the 18th century, has been passed to the University of Oxford.
