This fixed-term one-year posts would suit trainees who have a special interest in clinical and translational research and those who want to gain clinical research experiencebefore a decisionon pursuing an academic career. The post holder will have the opportunity to study for the Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Research. Ideally applicants will have completed Foundation Training and / or Core Training. The post will provide a solid basis from which to apply for either an Academic Clinical Fellow (ACF), IMT or ST post, or are suitable for a post-CCT fellow looking to expand their research experience.
This post is available from 6 August 2025 until 4 August 2026 and you must have full GMC registration with a license to practice.

The main duty of the post holder is either to support the delivery of cancer experimental medicine studies and clinical trials conducted at the Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Trials Research Centre or late phase studies and haematology research on ward 11 Freeman Hospital.
The fellow will be expected to serve as sub-investigator for research studies/clinical trials under the supervision of the respective principal investigator. The specific duties the fellow will be involved depends on individual trials but usually it will involve taking informed consent, assessment against eligibility criteria, assessment of disease activity and severity, assessment and reporting of adverse events, supervision of administration of the investigational medicinal product (IMP) and provide medical emergency cover for research participants attending the facilities. It is expected that the fellow will be supporting several trials concurrently. Training will be provided by the study sponsor for all clinical trials, and the fellow is also expected to attend additional regular training sessions on generic clinical and research skills provided by the unit.

The post holder will work closely with the principal investigators and their study team, the other research and support staff at the unit (e.g. Research Nurses, Research AHPs, Clinical trial assistants, Clinical Trial coordinators, Data managers). The fellow is also expected to attend monitoring visits arranged by the study sponsors as well as investigator meetings (which can be outside the UK for some international trials) as appropriate.
Personal Education:
The post-holder is encouraged to maintain clinical competence and good clinical practice. There are regular training sessions in clinical and research skills which the post-holder is expected to attend. Successful applicants will be encouraged to study for the postgraduate certificate in clinical research. This may be part or fully refunded, subject to successful completion of the year and course. There are ample opportunities to conduct additional clinical research projects.
Administrative:
Successful applicant will be expected to carry out all administrative tasks associated with the clinical trials that are allocated to him/her by the Director of the Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Trials Research Centre, including keeping of accurate and timely medical records, ordering investigations and receiving results.
Research/Audit:
There are ample opportunities to conduct additional clinical research/audit projects. This will be particularly attractive for post-holder who wants to gain additional experience in their chosen specialty or specialty of interest. This will be discussed at the start of the post so that appropriate academic/clinical supervisor can be identified.
Flexibility:
In line with the Trust’s core value of placing patients at the heart of everything we do, we are developing our service provision to be responsive to the needs of our patients. To meet those needs some staff groups will be increasingly asked to work a more flexible work pattern so that they can offer services in the evening or weekend. As a result any offer of employment to a consultant post will be subject to you agreeing to work a new more flexible pattern or working in the future if required, including evening and weekend work.
