Futures West are partners in the Brunel Centre, a new and innovative economic research centre for the West of England region. Futures West is hosted by Business West.
The Brunel Centre, created by the University of Bath with the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) and Futures West, is an innovative university-business partnership to power growth and devolution for the West of England.
The Futures West Foundation for Sustainable and Inclusive Economic Growth, is a collaboration between business and leading universities. We focus on tackling our region’s long-term challenges to raise productivity, prosperity and innovation.
These new organisations will pioneer new approaches to economic research and data analysis, with and for the West of England. We will establish evidence-based research and insights and strengthen our economic narrative to attract investment and inform policy makers.
About the role
This role as a Qualitative Researcher is an exciting opportunity to be at the cutting edge of qualitative research into new trends in key business sectors, market trends and economic policy.
You will be working alongside some of the UK’s best academic researchers and engaging with some of the UK’s leading companies, investors and innovators in globally relevant sectors and technologies.
Your research will be an integral part of Futures West and the Brunel Centre’s research outputs - helping to give insights into a range of economic and business trends and help guide economic policy and interventions. This will include work that helps inform national and local economic policy, including areas of current relevance such as industrial strategy and local growth plans.
Projects will include:
• Supporting the research and writing of a new Regional Economic Audit for the region,
• Delivering case study research. This will include conducting insightful research interviews with business leaders, operational staff, investors and innovators to gain a ‘cockpit view’ of current and emerging trends, pressures and opportunities.
• Doing deep dive studies on key economic and business sectors, the state of play in their domestic and global markets and outlining their key challenges and growth opportunities.
• Rapid response desktop research and data analysis work to help provide timely insights to policy makers and external stakeholders.
• Exploring thematic issues, such as skills supply, innovation, tax, investment, drivers of firm composition, investment and locational decisions or broader horizontal drivers of growth such as infrastructure, transportation and availability of suitable space.
Key Responsibilities:
• Conducting one to one and group interviews.
• Identifying suitable research leads and contacts and setting up a programme of research and interviews in response to planned research priorities.
• Provide in depth research and analysis on key business & economy issues and ensuring outputs are accessible and relevant to business leaders and policy makers.
• Writing case studies of individual companies and studies of sectoral trends and analysis. Collecting wider business intelligence from other sources.
• Using internal business data and surveys and through the Quarterly Economic Business Survey (QES).
• Represent Futures West externally with key business, academic, government and other stakeholders. Represent Futures West on agreed key stakeholder groups as appropriate to the activity of the post.
• Provide strategic horizon scanning and intelligence gathering support.
• You will help promote your research so that it is can be engaged with by businesses and policy makers.
Desired skills and experience:
Research
• Understanding how to engage and conduct qualitative interviews
o preparing, conducting and recording the outcome of interviews and research
o developing questionnaires and conducting surveys
o conducting literature and database searches
• Collect, analyse, and interpret data using quantitative and qualitative research methods, ensuring rigorous and methodologically sound approaches.
• Experience of conducting and writing research to a high and accessible standard.
• Ability to summarise and spot emerging trends and find key data and evidence.
• Able to quickly and robustly undertake rapid research tasks into critical policy questions.
Interpersonal and delivery skills
• Good interpersonal skills – able to explore and guide one to one interviews and discussions in groups.
• Ability to build and maintain trusted relationships and provide a credible interface with Futures West and the Brunel Centre, including for senior external partners.
• Responsiveness, flexibility and team working and ability to self-start.
• Ability to work to short and competing deadlines and manage research work within an overall work plan and to meet the deadlines and needs of others.
• Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
• Ability to think innovatively in how research and data can be used to raise awareness and profile.
• As part of the Futures West team you will be expected to be part of a close knit team and engage in external events and networks.
